Dr. Anahid Behrouzi, co-chair of the EERI Younger Members Committee and Assistant Professor of Architectural Engineering at California Polytechnic State University – San Luis Obispo, presented to the EERI Student Chapter at North Carolina State University on September 7, 2018. The presentation, entitled Machine Learning to Enable Image Classification of Earthquake Damage to Civil Infrastructure, introduced a set of software tools developed by architectural engineers and computer scientists at Cal Poly to enable rapid post-earthquake damage classification of buildings and above-ground infrastructure. The software package includes a manual photo tagging tool, an automated image classification tool, and post-processing scripts for ArcGIS mapping to enable data analysis related to the severity, type, and geographical distribution of civil infrastructure damage.
Dr. Behrouzi, an alumnus of North Carolina State University, also had the opportunity to tour NCSU earthquake engineering facilities and to meet with undergraduate students, graduate students, and engineering faculty during the visit.
